In accordance
with city codes, garage exhaust fans typically run continuously
during all periods when the garage may be in use to protect against
unhealthful buildup of carbon monoxide (CO). Generally, it is only
during particularly heavy traffic periods when CO levels might actually
require the use of the fans. In many cases, fans may only be needed
for one or two hours during the day, but are running 24/7, since
the time when fans may be needed cannot be known in advance.
City codes now
allow, and in some cases are mandating, the use of CO sensors (often
with VFDs) to operate fans only when necessary to reduce energy
cost and keep CO from reaching unhealthful levels. This results
in up to 90% reduction in energy cost and greatly increased fan
motor life.
